Patuxent River's X-47B Drone Complete's First Successful Catapult Launch

We have many accomplishments here in the south county portion of
St. Mary's County.  The work that many of our residents perform
in support of Navy projects is not always discussed publicly.  I
have pulled some highlights (see below) of a story by: Nidhi
Subbaraman, NBC News and I will provide a link to the full story
at the end of this article.
The U.S. Navy's X-47B drone has become the first unmanned craft
to complete a catapult launch from the flight deck of an
aircraft carrier. Today's demonstration took place on the USS
George H.W. Bush, off the coast of Virginia.

The X-47B drone is the star of the U.S. Navy's Unmanned Combat
Air System program.
After a flight of an hour and five minutes, the drone touched
down at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.
The X-47B Drone has been testing here in southern Maryland at
the Patuxent Naval Station.

“South County” refers to the most southeastern portion of St. Mary’s County. South County offers maritime charm, a myriad of recreational activities and a rich history to those who live and visit here.

Surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and St. Mary’s River, South County is the area located just south of NAS Patuxent River Gate 2 at Hermanville Road and includes its two main access roads, Route 235 and Route 5, which ends on the tip of the peninsula in picturesque Point Lookout State Park.

We encourage you to visit South County and discover the quaint restaurants, bed and breakfast inns, campgrounds, service stations, convenience and local grocery stores, and marinas that make up the fabric of this beautifully unique area that we call “South County.”
